Hangover Recipes from Around the World

Ugh. Carnival or Mardi Gras is done and it’s time to start the long road to recovery. Why? A few of us are off to SXSWi in Austin, TX next and we need to be ready. Because the entire world loves to drink, hangover cures vary as much as the alcohol does. Maybe you can try one of these instead of your usual bacon grease and Bloody Mary mix?

Shakshouka in Israel

Those with early morning headaches and queasy stomachs in Israel enjoy shakshouka. It’s also a very typical meal in the country the rest of the day as well. It’s a rather runny dish of poached eggs and seasoned tomato pepper sauce that’s supposed to be eaten with pita bread.

Some variations include dumping hot sauce, olives or even feta on top of the concoction. However, the original shakshouka (meaning “a mixture”) is perfect the way it is to cure what ails you the morning after.

Carbonara in Italy

Another recipe that includes eggs is the Italian pasta carbonara. It’s a rather thick and rich pasta that has lots of cured pork belly or other smoked meats, egg yolks, and of course, lots of cheese. Because of the eggs and pork, some have even called it the Italian version of bacon and eggs!

Carbonara is derived from the Italian word for “charcoal burner,” carbonaro. This gives the dish the nickname “coal miner’s spaghetti,” which is in turn used to refer to spaghetti alla carbonara in parts of the United States.

Congee in China

Smooth, mild, and easily digestible, the Chinese had the right idea when they started downing congee for a hangover food. It’s a rice dish that’s boiled down to a porridge in either a pot or rice cooker. Even better, some cookers have a congee setting so you can cook it overnight. This means you can start cooking your hangover food before your first sip of rice wine!

The healing power of the food is even evident in the name: in some areas of Burma it’s referred to as lu ma mar zar, or “food for the unwell.” It can also be made from cornmeal, millet, barley, or sorghum.

Soupe à l’oignon in France

It was a peasant staple back in history, nowadays in the U.S. it’s seen as a fancy soup, but in modern France it’s the perfect hangover cure. It’s French onion soup, or “Soupe à l’oignon”! Like congee, it’s easily digestible, with just the hint of snappy flavor due to the onions. But the broth, bread and cheese is sure to help your upset tummy.

This is most evident in its native country as some revelry actually doesn’t stop until you have the soup the next morning. This is particularly true when you’re at a wedding, as the celebrations can go all weekend. You’ll need plenty of onion soup come Monday morning!
